Our Story

Cathy is a a reunited adult adoptee of private, domestic, infant adoption. She sought out her birthparents when she first turned 18, only to find out that her birthmother had called in to the agency seeking her out that same day. She has been navigating reunion with her birthfamilies for the last twenty years, feeling her way through the dark to figure out what reunion - and family - is, creating a new extended family of sorts. She hopes to share what she's learned to help create a trail for those who are new on this journey while commiserating with those who have been in reunion for a long time.

She has written a memoir in partnership with her birthmother called Kathleen-Cathleen — A True Story of Adoption and Reunionwhere she and her birthmother write alternating chapters sharing their experience of reunion from both the perspective of the adoptee and the birthmother. They have chosen not to read each other's sides of the story until the book is published so that their perspectives stay intact and uninfluenced by each other. In the same way, they have been writing parallel blogs on shared themes: Cathy's (the adoptee) blog is reunioneyes.blogspot.com, and Kate's (the birthmother) blog is mothertone.wordpress.com.
Cathy works as Assistant to the Director of the Hatfield School of Government at Portland State University and lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, her two amazing young boys (Quinn, 6 and Reed, 4), her dog, Sammy and her many Sea Monkeys.
